Mas Maya Lime Wash is a natural and breathable paint distinguished by its earthy, mineral texture and suitable for interior and exterior surfaces. 

Crafted in Andalusia from the purest locally sourced limestone, the lime is blended with a refined composition of plant extracts and minerals, resulting in exceptional adhesion and even coverage.

To make the lime wash, you simply add water. Lime Wash colours are created by adding natural pigments to the Lime Wash Base. If you have chosen our Natural or Base colour, pigments are not needed.

For ease of application, we recommend using our traditional Andalusian Lime Wash paint brush.

A 500g bag yields one coat of approximately 16m2. We recommend applying an initial ‘base-coat’ and then adding a second coat once the first coat has dried. For most surfaces, two coats is enough but a third coat may be needed to create a greater depth of colour, texture or effect or if your walls are particularly porous or dark in colour.  Allow each coat to dry properly before deciding whether an additional coat is needed.

Measure the length and height of your wall. Multiply these numbers to find your square meterage. A 500g bag of Mas Maya Lime Wash covers 16m² (1 coat).

Paint in the best light possible. Natural light is much better than artificial light so try to plan accordingly.

When you apply the second coat over the first, you will notice the colour becomes more translucent and dark. Don't get stressed. As the second coat dries properly, the colour will gain more of an opaque effect, and your brush technique will come through. It’s a rewarding, creative and deeply mindful process.

Lime Wash colours are created by adding natural pigments to the Lime Wash Base. If you have chosen our Natural or Base colour, pigments are not needed.

If you have chosen our Natural or Base colour, pigments are not needed. You simply add the powder to the right amount of water and you mix for 5-10 minutes until you get a smooth and creamy substance. Let the substance settle for minimal 15 mins and stir once more before applying.

We recommend to stir occasionally while painting and use full batch in one go for colour consistence.

It can be tricky to choose a colour from your phone or computer as there is always a discrepancy between the digital representation and the physical colour.

The final colour you achieve with your project will be influenced to the quality and strength of the natural light, time of day, season as well as the number of coats you apply and the other colours around the space. Please also bear in mind that lime wash reflects light very differently to synthetic paint. The light reflection from the crystals in the minerals giving a unique and elegant glow like no other.

Yes, once you have cleaned the surface thoroughly, our Lime Wash can be applied directly over matte or semi-matte water-based paint of any colour and unpainted surfaces (such as concrete, brick, plaster and wood). If you’re applying Mas Maya Lime Wash over an oil-based paint, lacquered, glossy or semi-glossy surfaces, you should sand over it first by hand to give the Lime Wash better grip.

No, you don’t need a primer with our Lime Wash as we have added our unique mix of plant extracts that give it excellent adhesion. 

The first coat of Mas Maya Lime Wash is your base coat. Please ensure you let it dry thoroughly for at least 4-5 hours, before applying a second coat. The longer you let the base coat dry, the better the second coat will adhere.

Drying time varies considerably depending on room temperature and humidity. It usually takes around 4-5 hours for the first coat to dry. Once you are confident that the wall is dry and you can see the effect of the Lime Wash, you can start painting the second coat.

Applying Lime Wash is an interesting, mindful experience and very different from using acrylic pain.

Once you’ve mixed the Lime Wash Base with the pigment and water (as per our instructions) you'll notice that it’s thinner than standard paint. This is because Lime Wash performs best when applied in a looser consistency. It also makes it easier to apply as it absorbs into the surface (this is why it’s important to let all the coats dry properly). Lime Wash is a far more lively, organic product than synthetic alternatives. You’ll notice as it dries that the texture, colour and lime moves to the surface and gives a completely different look and feel to what you’re painting - it’s really fun to observe the transformation.

As previously mentioned, when you apply your second coat, you’ll notice the colour becomes transparent and dark as it was during the first application. Don’t worry. As it dries properly, the surface and colour will become more opaque, and your paint technique will come through. It is an interesting and very rewarding process.

No. One of the benefits of Mas Maya Lime Wash is that it is a strong, durable and breathable product. We recommend leaving the Lime Wash in its natural form so it can ‘breathe.’ This is both beneficial to both the environment and your health. It also allows the beautiful aesthetic patina to evolve over time. 

For the areas and surfaces where our Lime Wash isn’t recommended, you can use our Mas Maya Coating as this can be applied to literally any area and surface and many are colour matched to our Lime Wash. Mas Maya coating is perfect for floors, bathrooms and all interior and exterior spaces in regular contact with water.

There are generally three techniques we recommend using with Lime Wash; creating clouds, X-strokes and the more common up+down technique. The one you choose depends on the aesthetic look you want to achieve.

For the cloud effect you use loose, free strokes and stretch the Lime Wash as far as possible in all directions from a middle point. X-strokes is a technique where all of your strokes are crossed in a 45° angle across each other. This gives you a nice even surface with medium to high amounts of texture and effect. The up+down is the technique you’ve probably used in the past and speaks for itself. This method gives the least amount of cloud-effect and texture and I the one to go for if you’re looking for a flat, consistent colour block.

Each technique is really easy and there are no right or wrongs. Lime Wash is a natural material that will respond to the technique you use. The hard part is usually deciding which effect you like best. For a step-by-step tutorial, and for further inspiration, check out our videos here.

Our Lime Wash can be applied on cement, brick, untreated wood, plasterboard as well as surfaces that have already been painted with water-based or acrylic paint. Provided the surface is stable and not flaking, is free of dirt, grease, and soluble salts, and the surface absorbs the lime paint well, you’re good to go. If in doubt, try with a small area first. As with all decorating, preparation is key so please ensure you fix any problems first, scrape away loose debris and then dust and clean thoroughly before starting.

Yes. Lime Wash has traditionally been used on exterior surfaces, especially stone, brick, and stucco for many years. The famous pueblos blancos in Andalucia Spain, where Mas Maya is based, are the perfect examples of that.

Please note that Lime Wash is breathable and water-resistant but not completely waterproof. It allows moisture to escape, which helps prevent trapped-moisture damage. It will withstand normal rain once fully cured (usually after a few days). Heavy or constant rain exposure can cause gradual wearing or fading.

Mas Maya Lime Wash can be used on the walls and ceilings of bathrooms and kitchens, with gorgeous results.  It is not suitable for permanently damp - or high humidity - areas or environments where you have constant water (like in showers or near the sink). 

Lime Wash is absorbent, allowing moisture to evaporate. This also means that it can absorb materials that leave a mark such as toothpaste, soap and cosmetic products. Therefore, we do not advice to use Lime Wash in the shower area or directly adjacent to the bath. 

You can have Mas Maya Lime Wash on kitchen walls and ceilings as well, be careful though where the Lime Wash may come in contact with fat, oil or grease (around the stove). This will discolour the paint and because of its absorbance, these substances can leave a mark.

For the areas and surfaces where we do not recommend Mas Maya Lime Wash, our Mas Maya Coating is the ideal product to use! 

Mas Maya Coating is a versatile material that can be applied and used in many ways. It is easy to clean and simple to seal effectively, which is an important detail for floors, bathrooms, and other areas exposed to moisture or frequent use.

Unfortunately, our Lime Wash is not suitable to use on the floor as the Lime Wash is not hard enough. For floors we highly recommend our Mas Maya Coating. Mas Maya Coating is a versatile material that can be applied and used in many ways. It is easy to clean and simple to seal effectively, which is an important detail for floors, bathrooms, and other areas exposed to moisture or frequent use.

When applying Lime Wash on furniture or any other decorative objects, it is important to ensure that the surface is clean and free of dust, grease, and any existing paint or finish. 

Mas Maya Lime Wash can be used directly on surfaces that are painted with matt or semi-matt water-based paint as well as on unpainted surfaces such as concrete, gips, plaster, untreated terracotta, ceramics and wood.

All surfaces should be properly dry, clean, and free from grease. Also for these type of projects it is recommended to use a special Lime Wash brush to apply it.
